Running your own business is like driving in uncharted territory. You need to have a destination in mind and oodles of patience for the tough times ahead
Do you have what it takes to succeed at owning and operating your own business?
Your life is the reflection of all the choices you have made up to this point. Ten years from now, the same will be true. Your future is what you make of the choices you have. You may be one of the few who are satisfied with where you are today, personally and professionally. Then again, you may be part of the majority who are not. But either way, you are where you are because you have chosen to be there. If you're not satisfied, it's time to make an adjustment to your choices.
If you are thinking of starting your own business or anything else in life, having the desire to accomplish your goal is not enough.
However, it is still a start.
Here are seven tips you should arm yourself with:
1. Follow opportunity instead of savouring security
Most of us look for and cling to the security of a nine-to-five job. If you are thinking of striking out on your own, your family may advise you to weigh the consequences and to take your time in making the decisions.
Some may even advise you against it completely.
One way to avoid getting caught in a security trap is to set a time as to when you will leave your job. You need to be prepared and know how to spot, act upon and capitalise on the opportunities that are presented to you.
You also need to know if you can cope financially, or if you have what it takes to make it on your own.
2. Get things done
You want to see results from the work you do. As long as the work you do is helping you get a profitable result, they are not considered ruts.
They are pathways to success. Think of it this way. Efficiency is getting the job done right. Effectiveness is getting the right job done.
3. Make a profit, not a living
If you are an employee, you know how much you will be bringing home at the end of the month. But with your own business, you have to focus on making a profit and that means high sales and low overheads. To survive you must be focused on how you will make a profit today, tomorrow and the next week. You must find ways to keep costs down except in cases when your profit-making capabilities are compromised.
4. Look for opportunity
Success is the result of -making good decisions. Good decisions are made from good judgment. Good judgment comes from experience. Experience comes from bad decisions. The key is to gain experience from the mistakes and success of others. Seek out others in your field. Study and understand why they succeed or fail. Don't expect to make all the right decisions and don't let the fear of making mistakes inhibit you from pursuing new opportunities.
5. Know what people want
Know the who, what, where and why of your target customers. The success of your business is not the sum total of the knowledge you have gained. It still is, and always will be the 'sale'. Success is determined by which products sell and how well they sell. Never lose sight of the fact that marketing your customers' wants is your number one priority.
6. Keep the vision alive
Never lose sight of your goal or your dream. Know where you want to be in 10 years. Keep your vision alive and let it steer you in your search for success. Let it be the drive that keeps you going.
7. Work, patience and sacrifice
Let's face it : if it were that easy, everyone would be -successful. To succeed, you must dedicate yourself to doing what needs to be done and not just working on the clock. You must have the patience and persistence to ride out the hard times. Most of all, be prepared to -sacrifice your time, your social and personal life.
